A little bit of empathy goes a long way

I hold a Conflict Coaching and Mediation clinic at the local Citizens Advice Bureau every Monday and there are many people who come in seeking help.  Life has not been kind to some of these members of the local community, but it still takes a lot of courage (and a serious swallowing of pride) to put your hand up and say, “I can’t do this all by myself; I need some support.”

While we are falling over ourselves to try and ‘fix’ these people, we forget the power of empathy.  Time spent listening and trying to stand in the other person’s shoes is never wasted.  You can literally see the shoulders dropping and the head rising, as the cloud starts to lift a little.  To quote someone who received empathy yesterday – “You’ve turned my day around : )”
